Here is another Hip-Hop/R&B music video using all the exact same conventions..
Akon - Beautiful
Pop/Dance/Electronic
Lady Gaga - Just Dance
Pop/Dance/Electronic
Lady Gaga - Just Dance
- Bright electric colours
- Metallic/leather clothing
- Main focus on the main singer, everyone else is background
- Lots of conventional close up beauty shots
- Highly-charged
- Dance routines
- Bright lighting
- Disco ball
- Sexualised but in a way females would like and relate to as well was males
- Not objectified, completely different from R&B
- Makeup and hair done perfectly
As this was Lady Gaga's debut mainstream single it was really important to make it obvious what genre her music was and target her audience so as many conventions as possible were used to do this. Now as she's an established artist with a huge fan base she can go against and mix up typical conventions of music videos which is what she does. She's very unconventional, original and different which is why she is so successful and this is reflected in her recent music videos.
